Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel confirmed

May 4, 2013
2K Games has confirmed the existence of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, a spin-off that takes place between the events of Borderlands and Borderlands 2. It runs on the same engine as the second game, and appears to offer the same mix of looting and shooting, with four new characters, new weapon types and some mildly unhinged "terrain features" to round out the package.

The Pre-Sequel is in the works at Gearbox Australia, making it the second Borderlands release to be developed outside the main Gearbox studio in Texas. The stars may be familiar from prior games - in some cases, you're effectively filling in the backstory. There's Athena the Gladiator, a tank character with a chargeable, throwable shield known as the Kinetic Aspis. Wilhelm the Enforcer begins the game as a human, but can be gradually upgraded into a hulking cyborg. Nisha the Lawbringer is the Sheriff of Lynchwood in Borderlands 2, and Claptrap is, of course, the franchise's recurring manically depressed robot sidekick.

The game takes place on Pandora's moon, and sees you completing missions for "John", the programmer who would go onto become Borderlands 2's arch-nemesis Handsome Jack. Players will have to wrestle with the effects of low gravity - it's possible to blast some foes into orbit with well-placed grenades, for instance. You'll also have to worry about limited oxygen while fighting on the Moon's surface, though there appear to be cannisters of the stuff lying around the levels. Besides the returning weapon categories, the Pre-Sequel packs two new ammo types - Cryo, which freezes people, and Laser, which chops the target up into delectably seared nuggets.
