Free Xbox Live Gold weekend for Xbox 360 starts Friday in U.S and Canada

Jul 21, 2013
Xbox 360 owners in the U.S and Canada who have yet to sign up for the paid Xbox Live Gold service will be able to try it out this weekend. Microsoft has announced that starting on Friday at 12:01 am Pacific time (3:01 am Eastern time), the console owners who don't currently have a subscription to Xbox Live Gold will be able to access those features for free.

The Major Nelson site says the free time period will end at 11:59 pm Pacific Time on Sunday. During the weekend, users will be able to play games that have online multiplayer features and will also be able to access the streaming media apps for the Xbox 360 (some apps, such as Netflix or Hulu Plus, will still require users have a subscription to those specific services to access them), along with video chat via the Kinect add-on camera.

The free weekend is likely to help boost the recently launched Xbox 360 version of the popular PC free-to-play game 'World of Tanks'. Even though the game itself is free, it still requires a Xbox Live Gold subscription. By the way, Xbox One owners are out of luck as the free Xbox Live Gold weekend does not extend to Microsoft's newest game console.
