Modern Warfare multiplayer beta glitch reveals its loot box Supply Drops

The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare PlayStation 4 beta menu revealed Activision’s plans for Supply Boxes to return to the rebooted Modern Warfare, and players are not happy.

In an interview with Game Informer, Infinity Ward’s co-design director of multiplayer said that Modern Warfare would take a ‘player-first or player-forward’ approach. ‘It's something that's really important to us on the development side,’ he explained. ‘We want, when we release new content, for players to get access to that content and have fun with it, so it's a huge focus for us. We want players enjoying our game, having fun in our game.’ Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 became infamous for including microtransactions that locked high-tier weapons within loot boxes, and would therefore require players to shell out to acquire them or experience a gameplay disadvantage without those weapons.

The glitch on the Modern Warfare beta menu shows that a ‘Lootbox’ and ‘Common Supply Drop’ seem to be included in the game’s levelling rewards, appearing on the After Action Report screen. The reaction of the community to the Supply Drops has not been favourable. Activision’s approach to model the Call of Duty games as live service titles is well established but hasn’t always worked very well. The publisher’s chief operating officer Coddy Johnson said the new Modern Warfare will receive the ‘largest post-launch content pipeline in franchise history’, and that new multiplayer maps will be added for free.

This would theoretically mean that cosmetic items in loot boxes are likely, in order to support the longevity of Modern Warfare. Players are already stating that they will avoid the new game if that’s the case, but the Operators have been confirmed to only work as a cosmetic item and won’t offer any gameplay advantage.

Modern Warfare is set to release October 25, 2019, on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Seems like loot boxes are still popular despite the media pressure to remove them
