PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds desert map raises the playing field

Bluehole Inc. has unveiled a first ‘aerial’ look at its new desert map that’s making its way into its smash-hit PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds in the coming months, with the new map being based on the South American country of Peru.

It’s clearly a work-in-progress which will raise the level of play, literally, with multiple high(er)-rise buildings being introduced. This will increase the opportunities presented to players, opening up more multi-tiered shooting locations, a range of long-range sniping opportunities and even more frantic indoor battles. In the distance there are cliffs around the edge of the map, perhaps this will fence the action into a certain area?

The new desert map is being developed by two teams based in the US and Sweden, so this shouldn’t have an impact on the currently in-development traversal improvements. PUBG’s creator, Brendan Greene, has previously said that the desert map would take a while to come out, and with the increase in building density it’s clear why that’d be the case.

Another map inspired by the Adriatic is also in development. Speaking in an interview to Eurogamer, Greene said the area is still in the research and conceptual stage at the moment., ‘Sergei, our environmental artist, he’s leading the charge on that. He’s spent lots of time reading up on the Adriatic and seeing that area and what kind of trees are suitable, to make it feel like a realistic location, said Greene.’

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is due for a full release on PC in late 2017, followed by a ‘console launch exclusive’ release on Xbox One with Xbox One X enhancements.
