'Project Spark' open beta begins on Xbox One

May 4, 2013
Just two weeks after the closed beta for "Project Spark" launched for Xbox One owners, Microsoft has decided to open up the beta test for the game development tools to everyone who has the game console.

Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb, director of Xbox Live programming, announced that "Project Spark" open beta testing for Xbox One has now started. That means owners of the console can simply download and start using the tools without having to enter any beta unlocking code beforehand. Hryb notes,"In some cases, users that were already in the beta key queue may need to click the 'Request Beta Key' button, then exit and relaunch the game to get in for the first time."

"Project Spark" was first announced at E3 2013 in June and allows users to create all sorts of games via an easy-to-use interface. Beta testing for the tools began for Windows 8.1 users in October; any game created from that operating system can also be played on the Xbox One and vice versa. Microsoft also announced that "Project Spark" would also be released for the Xbox 360 but so far there's been no word on when that version will be released.
