Xbox Game Pass Announced

Microsoft has just announced a new subscription based program for Xbox One. Xbox Game Pass allows users to pay $9.99 per month for access to a library of over 100 Xbox One and Xbox 360 backwards compatible games.

Some of the games that will be available when the service launches are Halo 5, Payday 2, Lego Batman, Mad Max and Saints Row 4. The subscription also gives users a 20% discount on full game purchases on the Xbox store as well as 10% off of DLC providing you fully own the game the DLC is for.

The only real drawback with the system is that games are added and removed every month, couple this with the fact that you don’t actually own the games, it means that if you were playing a game regularly and it suddenly gets removed from the library, then you will be forced to purchase it to carry on playing.

Xbox Game Pass, and EA Access before it, are genuine attempts at making use of what the digital age offers, without comprising the experience for anyone.

The simple idea of offering a moderately-priced service with enticing benefits is something we don’t see a lot of in this industry. It worked for Comixology, Spotify, and Netflix. There’s no reason it can’t work for video games.
